OPIM 5668 Project Risk and Cost Management
Course Title: OPIM 5668 Project Risk and Cost Management

Summary: This professor has no clue how to teach this subject. However, this is a required course, so students need to take it anyway. Just study hard by yourself and put your effort into your group project to pass the course. Don't expect to learn anything useful.

Let me be very clear, I wouldn't have taken Dr. Calvert's course if I didn't have schedule conflicts. This was a complete waste of my money. I rarely judge a person or a thing in such a negative tone, but this professor's teaching style sucked! I basically learned nothing from this course. Fortunately, I passed it thanks greatly to the group project, and because I studied hard by myself.
Don't get me wrong, please! Frankly speaking, Dr. Calvert is a nice guy. However, he REALLY has been unable to teach a course, even though he has taught at UConn for more than 3 years when I was writing this blog. I bet the TA could have taught this class better than him if the TA were the instructor.
Compared to the other professor (Jennifer) teaching the same subject, the only advantage of taking Dr. Calvert's course I can think of was that he gives higher grades, on average, than the other professor. Based on what I have heard from other classmates taking Jennifer's course, she hasn't been a good teacher, either. On one hand, her teaching style is very straightforward, so students can probably understand what she is talking. Nonetheless, some students reflected that by "straightforward," she just read through those slides. On the other hand, it's very easy for students to lose points in her assignments and exams. She also has many case studies.
Given that OPIM 5668 is a required course, I was very disappointed that the professors who teaches this subject aren't good at all. Therefore, it doesn't really matter which professor you choose. If you want to pass this subject without too many assignments and exams, Dr. Calvert might be a slightly better choice.
In a nutshell, so far our program hasn't had any good professor for this subject. I would recommend just pass this course as soon as you can. If your grade isn't as good as you expected, just forget about it or let it go. You can take other easy A courses to make your GPA higher.
